Story Grid - Story Consulting

I'd like to work with an editor on a weekly basis to develop/finish my story.

Story Grid - Story Consulting

Would you like to work with an editor on your story?

Developmental editing means that you as the writer have an editor whom you can talk to and share materials with on a regular basis. Together we develop a working story that is commensurate with the Genre’s standards.

No matter what level of a storyteller you are at, you can benefit from Story Consulting. The consulting can begin as early as the first spark of a story idea or by working together on finishing or polishing the draft. If you have an idea you want to explore, we would begin by exploring the six core questions to nail down the story you want to tell. After that we would work on how to craft scenes that work and look at the art of telling a story that leads from the promise at the beginning to a surprising, but inevitable ending payoff.

The benefits of working 1-on-1 with a developmental editor:

  • How does the Story Grid help my comic book series or my graphic novel?
  • Are you a Story Grid Certified Editor?

What is the Story Grid?

The Story Grid methodology was developed by Shawn Coyne, an editor with over 25 years experience. The Story Grid tools help to analyze stories and provide helpful editorial comments. It’s like a CT Scan that takes a photo of the global story and tells the editor or writer what is working, what is not, and what must be done to make what works better and fix what’s not.

How does the Story Grid help my comic book series or my graphic novel?

The Story Grid is not about grammar or style. It focuses on what makes a story work and what does not. It zooms out and looks at the global story, or zooms in to the micro level of beats or scenes. For every perspective there are tools that help the wirter / editor to figure out what the story is missing, how to make it stronger and what to leave out or change. It's like a toolbox. It helps to understand and learn the craft of storytelling. And it doesn't matter, if the story is told via a song, a novel, an advertisement campaign or through a comic book. The Story Grid is universally applicable.

Are you a Story Grid Certified Editor?

Yes, I am.

I was trained by Shawn Coyne who continously develops the Story Grid methodology. I'm following the podcast, the editor's roundtable podcast, the Story Grid University courses and I'm working on my own case studies to show how the Story Grid can be applied for telling stories that work through the art of captivating pictures, captions, and dialogue.
